The State Treasurer is elected by joint ballot of both houses of the General Assembly (Const., Art. VI, sec. 1; Code State Government Article, sec. 5-101).

On January 16, 2007, the Joint Committee on the Selection of the State Treasurer was formed by the Senate President and House Speaker. The Committee will review resumes of interested parties, and conduct interviews on January 30, 2007. Election of the State Treasurer will take place on February 1, 2007.
