The State Treasurer is elected by joint ballot of both houses of the General Assembly (Const., Art. VI, sec. 1; Code State Government Article, sec. 5-101).

On January 17, 2003, the Joint Committee on the Selection of the State Treasurer was formed by the Senate President and House Speaker. The Committee reported its recommendation to the House of Delegates and Senate. The Committee's work was completed upon election of the State Treasurer on January 31, 2003.
