The State Treasurer is elected by joint ballot of both houses of the General Assembly (Const., Art. VI, sec. 1; Code State Government Article, sec. 5-101).

On January 18, 2002, the Joint Committee on the Selection of the State Treasurer was formed by the Senate President and House Speaker. The Committee reviewed resumes of interested candidates and interviewed candidates before reporting its recommendation to the Senate and House of Delegates. Upon election of the State Treasurer on February 5, 2002, the Committee completed its work.
